Getting ready
You lie down comfortably. Electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs.
Recording
You stay still during a recording lasting a few minutes. The machine measures your heart’s electrical activity.

Your doctor considers the tracing alongside your symptoms and medical history, then explains the next steps in your care.
When might an ECG help?
An ECG may help investigate palpitations, breathlessness or faintness, or monitor certain conditions and treatments. Your doctor decides whether the test is appropriate for your situation.
A resting ECG is offered according to your medical needs; it is not routine at every appointment.
Before your visit
- Bring previous ECG recordings, if you have any.
- Prepare a list of your medicines.
- Wear a top that is easy to remove and avoid creams on your chest on the day of the test.
